Abstract

1279977 Valve gear VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd 11 Dec 1969 [14 Dec 1968] 59568/68 Heading F1B An I.C. engine valve actuating mechanism for enabling the engine to act as a compressor during engine braking, has an exhaust valve cam (not shown) which is provided, in addition to the normal cam lobe, with additional cam surface arranged circumferentially to each side of the lobe, and the exhaust valve rocker 4 is mounted on an eccentric 5 carried by an angularly adjustable rocker-shaft 1. The rocker-shaft and attached eccentric shown are in position for normal engine operation. However, by angularly adjusting the shaft to the "brake" position as by a linkage or gear mechanism, the clearance between the end 7 of the rocker and the exhaust valve 3 is reduced so that the additional surfaces of the exhaust valve cam become effective to open the exhaust valve just before the end of the compression stroke, keep it open during the subsequent power and exhaust strokes and close it during the induction stroke. Angular adjustment of the rocker-shaft to provide the engine braking may be synchronized with mechanism to interrupt the engine fuel-supply or render the ignition system inoperative, or both.
