Abstract

1278321 Joint-making packing ENGINEERING COMPONENTS Ltd and R SWALLOW 17 Dec 1969 [29 Jan 1969] 4803/69 Heading F2B A gasket body for the cylinder head of an I.C. engine comprises two openings 10, 10A, Fig. 1 (i.e. for the cylinder bores), two eyelets 3, 3A, and a metal reinforcing member 15 which is engaged on opposite faces by the flanges of each eyelet, the material of the gasket body being absent from the region between the eyelets. The gasket body may consist of either a composite heat-resistant material, preferably containing asbestos or of such material with metal cladding on both faces; alternatively, it may consist of a layer of metal sheeting or wire mesh having on one or each side a layer of the composite material referred to above. The reinforcing member 15 may be made of solid steel and, if desired, extended to embrace openings for cooling passages (12, 12A), Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), to conduct heat from the eyelets (3, 3A) to the cooling liquid via the reinforcing member. Alternatively, the reinforcing member may be formed of superimposed metal layers 19, 20, Figs 5 and 6, the layer 19 being extended at 19A over the gasket body and into the cooling passage 12. Where the eyelets are closest to one another, the lower flanges of the eyelets may be integral as shown in Fig. 6.
