Abstract

1275384 Boots &c BRITISH BATA SHOE CO Ltd 5 Jan 1971 521/71 Heading A3B A safety shoe has a rigid toe-cap 16, e.g. of steel, and a rigid instep shield 22 which is connected to the toe-cap 16 by a flexible strip 20 which normally urges the shield 22 to a position over the instep but which is sufficiently flexible to allow the shield 22 to be swung away from the instep when the shoe is being put on or taken off. The shield 22 is made of steel and is dip-coated with plastics material. The strip 20 is of spring steel and is connected to the toe-cap 16 by rivet 19 and to the shield 22 by rivet 27. The strip 20 passes through a slit 21 in the upper 12 and through a rigid guide 25 on the underside of the shield 22, the guide also acting to transmit forces from the shield to the toe-cap 16. The shield is also provided with padding 31 and with a leather flap 29 having a lacing ring 30.
