Abstract

1275080 Carbonizing cellulose fibre NITTO BOSEKI CO Ltd 28 Oct 1969 [6 Nov 1968 5 Sept 1969 (2) 19 Sept 1969] 52701/69 Heading C1A In carbonizing cellulose fibre material, i.e. cellulose fibres or woven or non-woven fabrics made from cellulose fibres, the fibre is first treated with a strengh increasing agent, then heated at a temperature in the range 200- 350‹ C. in an oxidizing atmosphere and subsequently up to a 1000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere, the strength increasing agent comprising (1) at least one of: ammonium sulphite, ammonium bisulphite, ammonium bisulphate and ammonium thiosulphate, or (2) a mixture of at least one of: ammonium sulphate, ammonium bisulphate, ammonium sulphite, ammonium bisulphite, ammonium thiosulphate, ammonium sulphamate, and ammonium imidosulphonate, with at least one amine, or (3) a mixture of at least one of sulphuric acid, sulphurous acid and sulphamic acid with at least one amine. The heating rate in the inert atmosphere up to 1000‹ C. is preferably in the range 1‹ to 5‹ C. per minute. If desired the material so treated may be further heated in an inert atmosphere at a temperature above 1000‹ C. An agent for improving the flame resistance of the material may be added together with the strength increasing agent, and the flame resistance improving agent comprises at least one of: the ammonium phosphates, guanidine phosphate, aluminium ammonium sulphate, and tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride. The strength increasing agent and the fire resistance improving agent are preferably added as aqueous solutions. The amines exemplified as being used in the strengthening agents are urea, thiourea, guanidine, dicyandiamide, triethylamine, ethylene diamine triethanolamine, pyridine and aniline.
