Abstract
1275015 Extruding CEFILAC 5 Nov 1970 [5 Nov 1969] 52758/70 Heading B3P A hot extrusion process for making metal tubes comprises inserting a pierced billet into an extrusion container and extruding the billet through a die using a mandrel whose diameter is smaller than the pierced bore so as to leave an annular gap between the bore and the mandrel. The provision of the gap ensures that vitreous lubricant in the bore is not wiped off as the mandrel is inserted. The bore diameter exceeds the mandrel diameter by 5-30% of the difference between the container inner diameter and the mandrel diameter. The extrusion is effected by an hydraulic press which achieves full pressure in 0À5-4 seconds using a bushel valve or two parallel valves or by using valves with automatic programmed opening. An example is given of extruding carbon steel. In operation, the billet first flows into contact with the container wall and then with the leading end of the mandrel to trap the lubricant.
