Abstract
1378242 Making tubes JURY & SPIERS PTY Ltd 22 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 8225/72 Headings B3A and B3Q A thin walled tube is made by flattening a tube having a relatively thick wall, rolling the flattened tube to reduce the wall thickness, and expanding the flattened tube by fluid inflation. In a first embodiment an extruded brass tube is annealed at a temperature of 650 C. and passed between a pair of flattening rollers 21. The flattened tube 22 is re-rolled between the rollers which are set closer together until the required wall thickness is attained. The flattened tube is then coated in a tinning bath after which the coated tube is cut into lengths. A length of the coated tube is placed in a die 32 having a serpentine passage 35 and one end of the tube is flared by a tapered punch while the other end is sealed by crimping or welding. The tube is then inflated by fluid pressure to form a heat exchanger whose cross-section is as shown in Fig. 8. In a second embodiment a thickwalled tube is formed into a conical shape by a mandrel reciprocating within a series of circumferentially arranged segmented members before the flattening operation.
