Abstract
1,274,285. Thermally insulated tubes. VACUUM BARRIER CORP. 17 July, 1969 [24 July, 1968], No. 36017/69. Heading F2P. A semi-flexible cryogenic tube comprises an inner corrugated tube 10 separated by a helically wound spacer 12 from a helically wound tube 14, of heat conducting material, in contact with a thermally conducting layer 16 which surrounds tube 10, fibrous insulating layers 20, and an outer corrugated tube 24. Heat which leaks through insulation 20 is collected by layer 16 and removed by cooling fluid passed through tube 14. The helical spacer 18, which separates insulation 20 from layer 16, is laid with the opposite pitch to that of spacer 12. The spaces between inner tube 10 and outer tube 24 are evacuated. The fluid passing through the heat conducting tube 14 may be bled from the inner tube 10. Additional layers of heat conducting tubes, heat conducting layers and helical spacers may be provided to increase the insulation. The tube is suitable for the transfer of liquid helium, and, with the addition of an appropriate electrical conductor, as a superconducting cable.
