Abstract
1,272,512. Centrifugal compressors; turbines; engine stop gear. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. May 20, 1970 [June 4, 1969], No.24452/70. Headings F1C. F1K and F1T. A safety device 23, Fig. 1, shuts down a rotary machine, e.g. a condensing steam turbine or as shown a centrifugal compressor, when the rotor 13 moves dangerously near the casing wall 15. The device comprises a pressurized or evacuated tube 25, having an abradable cap 26, e.g. of leaded brass, protruding slightly into the rotor chamber 14. Abrasion of the cap by the rotor eventually effects venting of pressure fluid from or into the interior of the tube through passage 33, whereby a pressure-actuated switch 22 is actuated to shut down the compressor. The tube may contain pressurized liquid or gas supplied from a source 53 via orifice 52. The source may comprize the lubrication system or hydraulic or pneumatic control system, or the working fluid of the compressor. In a multi-stage compressor a separate safety device may be provided for each stage or for selected stages, the several devices being connected in parallel to a single pressureactuated switch arrangement. The tube is held in position with cap 26 seated against shoulder 29 by the action of nut 41 and associated sealing sleeve 43, or by pressure fluid acting on piston (54), Fig. 2 (not shown), at the tube end remote from the cap.
