Abstract

1,271,883. Coating polyester cords. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. 8 April, 1970 [14 April, 1969], No. 16775/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Polyester fibres are treated to increase their adhesion to rubber with an aqueous dip composition comprising: (A) a polyepoxide, having an epoxy equivalency of 1.5 to 2.5 and an epoxide equivalent of 90-300 which is a glycidyl ether of an aliphatic polyol; at least 50% by wt. of the polyepoxide is water soluble; (B) a polyamine having M.W. 150-600 in an amount of at least 25% by wt. of (A); (C) a rubbery terpolymer of butadiene, styrene and a minor amount of a vinyl pyridine. The composition has a total solids content of 15- 30% by weight. Examples of (B) are triethylenetetramine, tetraethylenepentamine, hexamethylenetetramine, pentaethylenehexamine and polyethyleneimine (M.W. 300-600). (C) may comprise 70 parts by wt. butadiene, 15 parts by wt. of styrene and 15 parts by wt. of 2-vinyl pyridine. After removal of excess dip from the fibres, they are heated to at least 400‹F for <2mins. The treated fibres may then be adhered to the polymer and cured.
