Abstract

A composition comprises a thermoplastic polymer and a mineral filler characterized in that, either the mineral filler is coated with an uncured epoxy resin and the polymer contains an amine hardener therefor, or the filler is coated with the amine hardener and the polymer contains the epoxy resin, or the filler is coated with both the epoxy resin and the amine hardener and incorporated in the polymer before the epoxy resin has completely cured. The filler may also be treated with an ethylenically unsaturated silane. Suitable fillers include glass fibres, mica and asbestos. Suitable polymers include polyoxymethylenes, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic acid copolymer and nylon.ALSO:Glass and asbestos fibres are treated with one or more of the components of an epoxy resin before a thermoplastic polymer is applied thereto. In particular, when the fibres are treated with an uncured epoxy resin and the thermoplastic polymer contains an amine hardener therefor, or the fibres are treated with the amine hardener and the thermoplastic polymer contains uncured epoxy resin, or the fibres are treated with both epoxy resin and amine hardener and the thermoplastic polymer is applied before the epoxy resin has completely cured. The fibres may also be treated with an ethylenically unsaturated silane. Suitable thermoplastic polymers include polyoxymethylenes, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic acid copolymer and Nylon.
