Abstract

1,270,632. Microcapsules. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 10 March, 1970 [10 March, 1969], No. 11459/70. Heading B8C. [Also in Division C3] -Inert liquids are encapsulated in polymeric microspheres by including the liquid in an emulsion polymerization medium which contains as a coalescing aid 0À2-2% based on the monomer(s) of a polymer of a sulpho-ester of an alpha, beta-ethyleneically unsaturated acid. In the examples are polymerized methyl methacrylate/2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, styrene/2- hydroxyethyl acrylate, styrene/acrylonitrile and styrene. The polymer added is poly-sulphoethyl methacrylate or a copolymer thereof with butyl acrylate styrene or acrylonitrile Liquids which are encapsulated are neohexane and liquid polybutadiene. A small amount of an electrolyte, e.g. sodium sulphate is preferably added.
