Abstract

1,270,364. Disc brakes. TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO K.K. 8 June, 1970 [11 June, 1969], No. 27603/70. Heading F2E. [Also in Division C3] In a disc brake including a rotatable disc 10, a caliper 30 straddling the disc, a pad 50 of friction material and a fluid pressure actuated piston 70 for forcing the pad into frictional engagement with the disc for braking action, an intermediate member 60 is positioned between the opposed surfaces of the pad and piston, the member being in the form of a plate of solid, low friction material with a binder, whereby friction between the pad and piston is reduced, and torsional vibrations and brake squeal minimized. As shown, the member 60 is secured by adhesive to the pad backplate 51 and is moulded from a mixture of graphite powder, phenol resin and asbestos fibres; a projection 76 on the piston having a crosshead 77 engages in a groove 53 of the member and backplate and a groove 54 of the pad to facilitate assembly and removal of the pad. Portions 37 of a part 34 prevent upward movement of the pads. In modifications, (a) the member 60 is moulded from molybdenum disulphide and polyethylene and (b) the member has a metal base-plate and is held in a holder 65, Fig. 10. Instead of graphite and molybdenum disulphide, the member may be formed from plumbic oxide, tin, metallic soap or carbon or a mixture of these materials and a binder of polyethylene or polytetrafluoroethylene.
