Abstract
1,269,014. Centrifugal casting processes. PLEUCO-G.m.b.H. CARL PLEUS & SOHNE AND DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. 20 Feb., 1970 [21 Feb., 1969], No. 8402/70. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] In a process for centrifugally casting hollow cylindrical bodies, e.g. cylinder liners, from a eutectic or hypereutectic cast iron melt having a total carbon content of at least 3À7%, the melt is superheated after the addition of alloying elements required for the formation of a pearlitic structure to provide a solution supersaturated with carbon and thereafter causing graphite to separate out either by inoculation of and/or reduction of the temperature of, the solution to form a heterogeneous mixture of graphite and liquid iron which is cast so that the hollow body produced has at its bore surface at least 3% of graphite in a pure pearlitic structure. The said inoculation or reduction in temperature may take place in the ladle or in the mould. The hollow bodies produced may contain several zones of variable structure or there may be a continuous graphite enrichment towards the bore. Peripheral speeds below 5 metres per second yield coarse graphite whereas speeds above this yield fine to punctiform graphite of dendritic formation.
