Abstract

1,267,902. Sealing cans. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 25 March, 1970 [10 April, 1969], No. 14570/70. Heading B3A. [Also in Division B8] An aluminium or tinplate easy-opening can end is formed with a folded bead 19 adjacent a chuck wall 16 to underlie and project radially inwards of an annular score line 24 defining a tear-out panel 26. The can end is made by deforming a flat disc between upper and lower die sets 36, 37 at a first station to form a flanged chuck wall surrounding a hat-shaped section 14a. The workpiece is transferred to a second station where the side wall 14b is loosely-folded by a co-operating hammer 49 and anvil 51 of upper and lower die sets 48, 47, Fig. 5 (not shown). At a third station, a scoring tool 54 and anvil 56 form the score-line 24 in the top wall 14c. The scoring tool is also provided with a rib 58 inboard of the scoring rib 57 to form an antifracture line 25 as described in Specification 1,201,513. Finally, the loosely-folded side wall 14b is collapsed between shaped dies 61 and 62 at a fourth station to form-the annular bead 23 underlying the score-line 24. A pull-tab 28, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), is riveted to the tear-out panel 26 for initiating rupture of the score-line 24 and removal of the panel.
