Abstract

1,266,887. Measuring liquid level electrically. K. J. WOOD. Nov.3, 1969 [Nov.13, 1968], No.53774/68. Heading G1N. A liquid level indicator includes a metal e.g. brass tube 5 apertured at 8 to allow ingress of the liquid and a temperature sensitive resistance element 2 mounted in the tube 5 in the form of a V. When the tube 5 is inserted in a liquid 9 e.g. the oil sump of a motor car, variation in current flowing through the resistance element due to cooling of the element by the oil is detected by the unbalancing of a bridge circuit which includes the element 2 in one arm thereof. In order to compensate for the effect of increase in temperature of the oil due to running of the engine adjacent arm R1 of the bridge is also mounted in tube 5, the effect of which is to tend to increase the out of balance current which would normally be falling due to the increase in temperature of the oil. By ensuring that a small portion of the resistance element 2 is not immersed in the oil 9 further temperature compensation is obtained since this forms a non-linear resistance. Thus the total effect of this non-linear resistance and resistor R1 is that both arms of the bridge are altered in the direction required for compensation. The effect of the non-immersed part of the element 2 is also to compensate for the effects of battery voltage variations.
