Abstract
1,266,259. Centrifugal separators. OTTO DURR K.G. 25 March, 1970, No. 14546/70. Heading B2P. An apparatus for cleaning a gaseous medium having particles, e.g. of paint or dust, therein, comprises a chamber 31 defining a substantially ring-like path, a rotary impeller 21 for passing the gaseous medium through the chamber and for imparting to the gaseous medium in the chamber a vortex rotation about the whole of the ring-like path thereby separating the particles from the medium by centrifugal force and an opening 34 for removing the gaseous medium from the whole of the ring- like path. As shown, air containing paint particles passes from a paint-spraying bath 10 through a grate 11 and water screens 42, 43 and enters the rotating impeller 21 axially via a duct 24. Whilst rotating, the air enters the annular chamber 31 tangentially, being thereby induced into a helical vortex rotation X 5 around the path defined by the chamber. From the chamber the air passes outwards via the opening 34 into an outer annular chamber 33 where, as a result of its tangential entry and a guide wall 29 it is imparted a vortex rotation X 6 of opposite direction to vortex rotation X 5 . The air then passes into a chamber 37 and after passing around a wall 36, through a screen 41 and around a deflecting wall 40, discharges through an exhaust pipe 39. Under the action of the vortex rotations X 5 , X 6 , the heavier paint particles are centrifuged out and drop into a collecting water trough 15. The remaining particles separate on the walls 36, 40 and at the screen 41 and fall on to a partition wall 25 from where they flow, e.g. through discharge pipes, to the collecting trough 15. More than two series-connected annular chambers 31, 33 may be provided and several separators or impellers with associated annular chambers may be connected to the same watercollecting trough and/or exhaust into a common exhaust pipe.
