Abstract

1,264,871. Electrode assemblies. DALIC S.A. and LE CARBONE-LORRAINE S.A. April 25, 1969 [April 29, 1968], No.21366/69. Heading C7B. An electrode assembly for use in an electrolytic process, such as electro-plating, anodic oxidation, electro-chemical machining and/or polishing, comprises an electrode (anode or cathode) in face to face contact with at least one flexible absorbent porous carbonaceous member, preferably amorphous or graphitised carbon obtained by pyrolysis of organic felts, fibres or cloth, in turn in face to face contact with a non-conductive absorbent material. The assembly may be cemented together with organic substances and then pyrolysed, or integrated by carbonaceous threads. In electroplating e. g. with copper, the member C2 may be placed between the copper anode 1, fitted with perforated insulating electrolyte tubes 6, and the non-conductive absorbent material 2, e.g. cottonwool, cellulose, synthetic fabrics and/or brushes with bristles, in contact with the workpiece 3 to be plated. In electro-polishing, two porous members C21 and C22 each fixed to a graphite plate 11 may be used to receive electrolyte 10 and to provide for circulation of heating or cooling fluid 9, the whole being placed between the cathode 1 and a porous asbestos material 12 in a support W. The latter electrolyte may contain concentrated sulphuric or phosphoric acid. For fused salt electrolysis, the member C2 may be a carbon ring heated by A. C. Fig. 8 (not shown). In plating, the anode may be clad with the carbonaceous member to serve as a filter for residues from anode dissolution. For anodising aluminium with H 2 SO 4 solution, a tampon made of 17 mm of graphitised carbon absorbent and 1 mm of PTFE mesh fabric may be used.
