Abstract

1,263,914. Twisting flexible elements together. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 27 May, 1969 [28 May, 1968], No. 25535/68. Addition to 1,209,484. Heading D1T. A method of twisting together a plurality of flexible elements 1, Fig. 1, comprises drawing the elements from stationary supply devices 2, passing them through a die 4 to form a bunch 5 and advancing and twisting the bunch so formed by stationary drawing means 6 having at least one endless gripping surface which moves in a closed path and engages the bunch over a part of the closed path which is obliquely inclined with respect to the axis of the bunch 5, and feeding the bunch into a double-twist bunching machine 8 whose flyer 9 is driven in the same direction as but at a speed less than the speed of rotation of the longiudinally advancing bunch 5 to the extent that at least a substantial proportion of, but not substantially more than, the twist present in the finished product taken up at 12 in the bunching machine 8 is put in prior to the entry of the bunch into the bunching machine. In Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the endless gripping surface is a skew roll (15) arranged obliquely with respect to the axis of the bunch 5, the skew roll (15) being driven by a motor 16. The bunch 5 may be supported by one or more backing rolls (17) skewed at the same angle as the skew roll (15). There may be means (18) for driving each backing roll. The peripheral surface of each roll may be elastically yieldable. In Fig. 4 the endless gripping surface is a belt 19 having at least one helical turn around and in contact with the bunch 5. The belt is driven by a motor 25 and carries a jockey pulley 26. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the bunch 5 passes between two endless belts. Pressure pads (29, 30) force the belts into engagement with the bunch 5 and at least one of the belts is driven. The belts are skewed relatively to the direction of motion of the bunch 5.
