Abstract

1,263,551. Making plastics bags. CENTRA ANSTALT. 5 May, 1969 [30 Oct., 1968], No. 22885/69. Heading B5D. A machine, adjustable for making plastics bags of different lengths, comprises a roll 2 of flattened tubular sheet, guide means 3, a box 9 containing feed rolls 39, 40 and rolls 53, 54 carrying two heat resistant conveyer belts 43, 44, a box 10 carrying electrically heated 'jaws for sealing the bag bottom, the jaws being cam operated, a box 11 containing liquid cooled jaws so that the bags which pass through both boxes 10 and 11 whilst held between the belts 43, 44 do not distort with the heat, a box 12 mounting rolls 67-70 carrying the other ends of belts 43, 44 and two of which are adjustable by an eccentric to tension the belts and also carrying a grooved arm 42 for supporting one end of a number of thin belts 83 conveying the bags through a box 13 where a straw is inserted into each bag by means of first and second reciprocating needles (Fig. 18, not shown) and finally a cutting device 14 where a blade (Fig. 20, not shown) is drawn across the plastics web. A clamping jaw holds the web during cutting. The completed bags then pass along the belts 83 to a stop 112 where they are automatically taken up by a filling machine. The boxes 11, 13 and 14 are adjustable along the machine by means of a pinion 15 engaging a rack 27 extending along the length of and fixed to the machine, a wrench being applied at 29, Fig. 7, to effect the adjustment. The sealing Jaws 65, 66 are actuated by a cam 58 and are mounted on springs 74, Fig. 7. Protection arms 75-78, Fig. 11, are provided to shield the belts 43, 44 from thermal radiation of the jaws 65, 66 when the jaws are open, the arms are operated by electromagnetic pistons (Fig. 12, not shown) or, in the event of these pistons failing to operate, by a system of levers 81. The main drive for the machine is derived from a shaft 24 connected to three shafts such as 32, 33, those boxes which are adjustable being connected to their appropriate shaft by a splined connection.
