Abstract

A packaging machine has a first conveyer for moving articles singly into a pocket on a rotating drum, plungers on the drum transferring each article together with a wrapper held by a suction device to a pair of jaws fitted on a second conveyer, the wrapper being thus folded to U-form about the article and the conveyer moving the partially wrapped article relative to further folding means. Bars of soap 6 are transferred from a shoot 18 by a roller (Fig. 2, not shown) on to a track 12 along which they are moved by pushers fitted to a conveyer 1, there being a feeler arm 20 (Fig. 2, not shown) sensitive to each bar 6 so that in the absence of a bar the corresponding pusher travels in a flat position beneath the track 12. The drum 3 is rotated about its axis and has a plurality of pockets 31 (Fig. 4, not shown) pivoted on one of its flat surfaces for receiving the bars 6 as they reach the end of the conveyer 1. Wrapping material 7 fed from reels 107, 207 via driven rollers 46 and a cutter 7 is held by a trough-shaped multi-apertured suction pipe (Fig. 6, not shown) in the path of a bar 6 when it is expelled from the pocket by a plunger into folder jaws attached to the chains of the second conveyer 2, so that the wrapper is folded into a U-shape around the soap bar. A reciprocating folder plate 57, end flap folders 63 and guides 69, 70 (not shown) and a bottom folder 104 complete the folding of the wrapper in known manners. A conveyer 8 and shoot 9 remove the wrapped bars. Conventional adhesive-applying or heat sealing means may be incorporated.
