Abstract

1,262,850. Laminates. FORMICA CORP. 15 Sept., 1970, No. 44065/70. Addition to 1,135,760. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B6] A process for making a decorative laminate with an embossed surface from thermosetting resin-impregnated paper sheets comprises forming between two flat metal plates an assembly in stacked relationship of either (A) (1) a plurality of core sheets impregnated with thermosetting synthetic resin, (2) an embossing design, (3) a print or decorative sheet impregnated with a thermosetting synthetic resin which is transparent when cured, (4) a release sheet and (5) cushioning or (B) (1) a plurality of core sheets as defined above, (2) a print or decorative sheet as defined above, (3) a release sheet and (4) an embossing design, consolidating the assembly under conditions of heat and pressure which do not deform the embossing design and thereafter removing the metal plates, the release sheet and (in A) the cushioning is characterized in that either (c) the embossing design comprises a raised design of hard particulate matter adhered to a flat carrier surface by means of an adhesive printed in that design, and either (a) a print sheet carrying a printed decorative design in at least two colours, or (b) a decorative sheet having a surface exhibiting a decorative design in at least two colours is used or (D) a decorative sheet having a surface of either (a) a single colour or (b) which exhibits. a decorative design in two or more colours is used. The embossing design may be applied directly to the reverse surface of the print sheet. The particulate material may comprise sand, ground glass, sugar, salt or finely divided thermoset resinous material. The embossing may be formed from thermoset, thermosetting or thermoplastic resin compositions and may be applied to the carrier surface which may in (B) be the release sheet by hand painting, air brush, spray, stencil or silk screen, gravure or thermogravure. The core sheets may be impregnated with a phenolic resin and the print or decorative sheet with a melamine-, urea- or thioureaaldehyde resin.
