Abstract

1,262,303. Substituted benzthiazoles. SANDOZ Ltd. 15 Jan., 1969 [24 Jan., 1968 (2); 17 April, 1968 (2); 14 Nov., 1968; 18 Nov., 1968], No. 44236/71. Divided out of 1,262,301. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of formula wherein n is 1-4, Hal is a halogen atom and rings B and D may be further substituted are prepared by reacting the corresponding aminophenyl-benzthiazole with n moles of a halomethylating agent. The use of the compounds as intermediates in the preparation of azo dyes is described and claimed in Specification 1,262,301. The compounds may be further reacted with amines or N,N-disubstituted hydrazines to prepare diazo components. In examples: (1) 2 - (4<SP>1</SP> - aminophenyl) - 6 - methylbenzothiazole is reacted with paraformaldehyde, H 2 SO 4 and Cl.SO 3 H to give a chloromethyl derivative which is further reacted with trimethylamine or with (4) N,N-dimethylhydrazine or (5) dimethylamine.
