Abstract
1,262,075. I.C. engine valve gear. BRYCE BERGER Ltd. April 29, 1969 [May 6, 1968], No.21265/68. Heading F1B. A system for operating a valve 10 Fig.1 or valves of an I. C. engine has an accumulator 28 for pressurized fluid delivered thereto as by a pump 29 of the variable displacement plunger type (40) Fig.3 (not shown) and a control slide valve 22 operable as by a cam or hydraulic, pneumatic or electromagnetic means in synchronism with the engine for communicating the pressurized fluid in the accumulator with ram means 11 for opening the valve 10 or for communicating spent pressurized fluid in the ram means with a drain 17 for closing the valve 10. Port 15 is closed by piston 12 as it nears the end of downward stroke thereby creating a hydraulic lock which stops the piston. Restrictors 30, 31 control the rate of closing and opening of the valve 10, and restrictor 32 controls the rate of recharging of the accumulator. The rate of opening of the valve 10 can be controlled by adjusting the pump. As valve (43) may be arranged between the accumulator and slide valve to block the flow therebetween when the pressure in the accumulator has fallen to a given value during opening of the valve 10, to control the extent of opening thereof the given value being dependent on a control pressure fluid supplied to the valve (43) through a line (46). The valve (43) may be combined with the accumulator Fig.4 (not shown).
