Abstract

1,262,059. Heat exchanger protector. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 13 Oct., 1970 [13 Oct., 1969], No. 48670/70. Heading F4A. In a liquid metal heat exchanger, primary fluid, e.g. liquid sodium, flows through a chamber 28, defined by housing 12 and tube sheet 14, entering by port 16 and leaving by port 18. Secondary fluid, e.g. water, passes up tubes 20 through the sodium from space 30. The tubes are welded at 22 to stubs 24 on the tube sheet and, to protect the surrounding tubes andthe chamber walls from the results of an accidental leak and sodium water reaction at these weak points, an annular shield 34 is placed around each weld. The shields are concentric with and annularly spaced from the tubes 20 and are joined at 36 to the tube sheet. An annular shield 40 surrounds all the tubes, spaced from the housing 12 and secured to the tube sheet, as further protection. Shields may protect any weld between tube sections within the chamber.
