The tube supporting end plate 18 of a shell and tube heat exchanger comprises a part 19 of larger diameter than a second part 20, a concave shoulder 21 being formed at the junction of the two parts. The part 19 is inserted within a flange ring 11 of larger diameter than the heat exchanger shell 10 and welded to the end thereof, a peripheral locating ring 23 around the first part of the tube sheet engaging in a recess 14 in the flange ring 11. A collar 25 surrounds the second part 20 of the tube sheet with clearance and is secured to theflange ring 11 by bolts 37 passing through clearance holes 16 in the flange ring 11 and engaging in threaded holes 31 in the collar 25, a sealing ring 22 being clamped in place against the shoulder 21 of the tube sheet and the hollowed edge 24 of the ring 11. A closure plate 32 is secured to the collar 25 by means of bolts 38 passing through clearance holes 33 in the closure plate 32 and engaging in the threaded holes 31 in the collar 25, a second sealing ring thereby clamped in place against edges 36, 30 of the tube sheet 18 and collar 25 respectively, and in a groove 34 set in the closure plate 32. Radial holes 27 in the collar 25 extend from a clearance 26 between the collar 25 and the second part 20 of the tube sheet 18 to the periphery of the collar for leak detection.
