Abstract

[Also in Division G2] In a control system for a microtome having a fixed knife (14, Fig. 4, not shown) and a movable specimen holder (18), a motor 138 (Fig. 2a) rotates a lever (110, Fig. 4) to drive the holder in the cutting direction and two motors 64, 64a (Fig. 2) operate two wedges (28, 30, Fig. 4) to move the holder in the feed direction. The motor 138 is compound wound and is fed from a tapped transformer 150 through a rectifier 160 whilst its field winding 140 is fed through a rectifier 162. For drive reversal, the pole windings 142, 144 are excited in the reverse sense by reversing the switches 146a, 148a controlled by relays 146, 148. A resistor 158 acts as a current surge limiter, and so provides built-in braking, whilst a mechanical brake (Fig. 3, not shown) is controlled through a magnet (165). A signal lamp 126 (Fig. 2) is put across the motor circuit AB. The motors 64, 64a are controlled in part by switches 100, 102, 104, 106 which are suitably positioned to limit the movements of the wedges (28, 30) in the feed direction.
