Abstract

1,259,160. Rack-and-pinion steering. ADWEST ENG. Ltd. 28 Oct., 1970 [29 July, 1969], No. 38010/69. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] In a steering mechanism for a vehicle such as a dump truck or mechanical digger, wherein it is required that the vehicle be steerable from two different control positions, two pinions 3, 3a mesh opposite sides of a toothed rack 1 connected to the steerable ground-engaging wheel or wheels of the vehicle. Hydraulic power assistance may be associated with one or both of the pinions and may comprise a doubleacting piston 26 carried by the rack and a rotary control valve 29 associated with one of the pinions and controlling the flow of fluid under pressure to one side or the other of the piston 26.
