Abstract

1,257,794. Ignition systems. ASSOCIATED ENG. Ltd. June 25, 1969 [June 28, 1968], No.31086/68. Heading F1B. [Also in Divisions G2-3] Ignition is controlled with the aid of a solid state light source 1. Each light guide 3 passes light to a photo-electric detector 4 such as an SCR device whose output feeds an electronic pulse forming circuit 5 which feeds a high tension coil 6. The rotating light guide 2 is driven from the engine through a mechanical advance-retard timing control 8. In a modification a delay circuit controlled according to engine speed and/or manifold depression is included. In another modification a cranked rotatable light guide co-operates with pairs of fixed light guides. The first light guide of each pair is connected to the input of a photo-electric detector which feeds a trigger circuit through a delay circuit. The second light guide of each pair transmits bright light pulses to a light-sensitive device which initiate switching of a voltage to a high tension coil having a spark-plug associated therewith.
