The or each axial outlet 41 of a vortex amplifier has convergent and divergent sections 42, 44 spaced by a cylindrical portion 43. The Specification sets out dimensions for optimum performance and discusses the operation of a number of different embodiments. In one of these Figs. 11a, b (not shown) the peripheral control jets (113) are supplemented by additional control jets (114) nearer to the centre of the vortex chamber.
