Abstract
1,254,894. Control systems for gas discharge lamps. YISSUM RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CO. 24 Jan., 1969 [29 Jan., 1968], No. 4156/69. Heading H2H. Apparatus for starting a fluorescent lamp F comprises a thyristor SCR connected in series with the filaments F1, F2 of the lamp and a ballast choke L1 across an A.C. supply, the gating potential for the thyristor being derived from a voltage divider R1, R2 connected across the anode and cathode of the thyristor. Thus current flows in the filaments F1, F2 in alternate half cycles until the filaments are heated sufficiently for the lamp to strike whereupon the voltage across the lamp drops to a value insufficient to render the thyristor conductive so terminating the flow of filament current. To improve the stability of the circuit one of the resistors R may be replaced by a thermistor or a series connected diode and Zener diode. Alternatively one or more diodes may be connected in the gate connection or the cathode lead of the thyristor.
