Abstract
1,250,852. Shielded containers. GRAVINER MFG. CO. Ltd. 21 July, 1970 [26 July, 1969], No. 37643/69. Heading B4Q. A container for transporting radioactive material provides in addition to shielding, protection against thermal and mechanical shock. The material is carried in a steel liner 12 surrounded by lead 10 in turn surrounded by cork 11. The cork is in the form of resin-bonded granulated cork board and the side walls comprise a stack of cork rings, the uppermost ring 11a having a smaller internal diameter. The bottom comprises a cork disc 11b. The upper end of the liner 12 has a flange 12a and bolts 14 are anchored in the lead 10, these bolts extending through the flange and a steel lid 16 retaining a lead plug 13. The assembly is manufactured in the inverted position by pouring molten lead through an opening in the disc 11b to fill the space between the liner 12 and the cork 11. The assembly is surmounted by a cork disc 11c and housed in a steel drum 18.
