Abstract

A straight bar machine has a narrowing head for effecting loop doubling on a change from rib to non-rib fabric comprising transfer point selectors corresponding to the needles and rendered operative in groups. The first group may be of any predetermined size; groups becoming operative at each operation are also of this size. The ends of transfer points 17 are rendered operative by control elements 22 slidable in the narrowing head. Pivoted selectors 26 similar to, and operated in a similar manner to the arrangement described in Specification 1,185,649 are mounted above each element. They can be swung clear of rods 40, 41 shiftable across each half of the machine division, by a swinging bar. When doubling is required the control rods 40, 41 are displaced inwardly according to the required doubling frequency. The selectors 26 whose arms 261 overlie the rods so that projection 26c strikes the head of element 22 deflect points 17 into operative positions when bar 31 is raised. On a single needle inwards transfer, doubling-occurs. The operation is repeated with racking of the rods in uniform steps, manually preset on a counter, by screws 50, 51 between each transfer so that successively larger groups of points are operative. Doublings may be similarly effected by displacing the rods from a central position outwards. When doublings are indicated on a pattern the screw motor is started and the counter energised. Each time the head is lowered the motor clutch engages, the screws are rotated and their revolutions recorded by the counter. When the counter reaches its preset limit the clutch disengages and transfer takes place. The rods are moved a uniform distance between each transfer until a limit switch is tripped. The screws are thereafter returned to their initial position.
