Abstract
124,819. Day, B. I., and Rolls-Royce, Ltd. April 20, 1916. Wire and rod couplings and joints.- The struts, booms, and stays of the car framework of air-ships, aeroplanes, &c. are connected together by ball-andsocket joints to minimize bending- movements. Fig. 1 shows a car frame comprising booms a, struts b, and stays c connected by ball-and-socket joints, the rigging cables d and the tierods e being also connected to the joints. Fig. 3 shows one of the joints, in which the stay is provided with a two-part spherical end c<2> forming the inner member of the joint; the booms a are formed with part-spherical ends a<2> which engage on opposite sides of the member c<2>, and the strut b is formed with a semi-spherical member b<2> adapted to bear on the members a<2>, the joint being completed bv a semi-spherical part b<3> which is bolted to the part b<2>. The cable d is passed through holes in the members b<2>, a<2>, c<2> and attached by a nut d<2> to a part-spherical bearing-member d' inside the joint. The tie-rods e are attached to flanges e<1>.
