Abstract

1,246,512. Bleaching pulp, and apparatus therefor. SUNDS A.B. 8 Nov., 1968 [10 Nov., 1967], No. 53053/68. Headings D1L and DIP. In a process for bleaching cellulosic pulp by means of a gaseous bleaching agent, e.g. oxygen, in a downward-flow bleaching tower having in its upper portion above the level of pulp a volume of pressurized gas, prior to feeding the pulp into a conveying means which feeds the pulp to the bleaching tower against the pressure prevailing therein steam and/or gaseous bleaching agent is introduced into the pulp to flow counter to the direction of flow of the pulp replacing wholly or partially the air present in the pulp and the pulp is then conveyed to the bleaching tower and treated by introducing gaseous bleaching agent into the tower, preferably in a space at the top of the bleaching tower above the column of pulp in the tower. In the drawing dewatered pulp preferably having a consistency of about 20% by weight, is moved sideways from filter 7 by screw conveyor 8 to substantially vertical conduit 9 and conduit 10 which has a larger diameter than conduit 9 because it encloses screw conveyor 11, and by pump 6 to bleaching tower 1. The air in the pulp is partly or completely replaced by gaseous bleaching agent and/or steam introduced via conduit 12, the supply of which is controlled by valve 16 controlled by sensing member 17 for sensing the concentration of gaseous bleaching agent and/ or steam which ascendsin conduit 9. Bleaching tower 1 is provided with supply conduit 2 for pulp, outlet conduit 3 for treated pulp, dilution nozzles 4 and stirring means 5 for providing a uniform decrease of the consistency of the pulp, conduit 13 for the introduction of gaseous bleaching agent, safety valve 14 and a movable member 15 adapted to work the pulp upon its entering the tower.
