Novel compounds (I) (including salts thereof) where X is CO or SO 2 , R<SP>1</SP> is halogen, CF 3 , 5R<SP>5</SP> or OR<SP>5</SP> where R<SP>5</SP> is C 1-4 alkyl, R<SP>2</SP> is H, CO.R<SP>6</SP> where R<SP>6</SP> is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, haloalkyl, CONH 2 , CONH.alkyl or CON(alkyl) 2 , R<SP>3</SP> is methylene optionally substituted by Me or Et, R<SP>4</SP> is H or C 1-6 alkyl and n is 0, 1 or 2, are obtained by interaction of R<SP>4</SP>.CHY.(R<SP>3</SP>) n .X. (R3) n .CHY.R<SP>4</SP> (Y is Cl, Br or I) and compound II (obtained, e.g. by treating a corresponding formyl derivative III with sodium borohydride) or by interaction of R<SP>4</SP>.CH=CR<SP>8</SP>.X.CR<SP>8</SP>= CH.R<SP>4</SP> (R<SP>8</SP> is H, Me or Et) and II (affords I in whicn n is 1); acylation and/or salt formation may be effected if desired. 2 - Bromo - 4 - (1 - piperazinyl) - benzaldehyde hydrochloride (i.e. a compound III) is obtained by treating the N-formyl derivative of N-(3- bromophenyl)-piperazine (formic acid on N-(3- bromophenyl)-piperazineobtained in turn, by reacting 3-bromoaniline with diethanolamine in the presence of HBr) with phosphorus oxychloride in the presence of dimethylformamide followed by hydrolysis. Pharmaceutical preparations having antischistosomiasis activity contain I as active ingredient; administration is orally or parenterally.
