Abstract
1,245,907. Making metal elbows and return bends; angular bending. R. J. LATHAM. 21 Jan., 1970, No. 2969/70. Headings B3A and B3E. A method of making metal elbows and return bends comprises making two substantially straight parts 1, 2 of trough or gutter-like shape from a strip or plate of stainless steel, bending the parts lengthways into a part circular shape in a tube bending machine to form inner and outer diameter parts, placing the parts together to form a part-circular tube, welding the parts together and finishing the tube to form an elbow or a return bend. The trough like part 1 is secured to a former 3 by a clamp 7 and a back bar 4 fits into the trough of the part 1. The back bar is engaged by rollers 9 mounted in a fixed support 9a. A turntable 6 is then rotated and as the clamp 7 is fast therewith, the part 1 is bent around the former 3 and wrinkling is prevented by the bar 4, which is carried along tangentially to the former. The outside diameter part 2 is formed in substantially the same way, with the clamp (7), former (10) and back bar suitably modified to form the concavity facing radially inwardly, Fig. 3 (not shown). A 180 degree return bend is formed, which may be used as such or cut to a required size.
