An array of parallel screw extrusion presses have a common supply hopper 2 delivering crushed and washed bagasse into their individual inlets, their annular extrusion orifices being variable in area by axially movable plugs 57, urged by individual pistons under a common fluid pressure towards the closed positions. The press barrels 43 include internal breakers 50, some of which are replaced by wash liquid nozzles. The screw pitch decreases towards the orifice but is uniform upstream of the barrel where it pushes material across screens defining the hopper floor.
