Abstract
1,242,053. Moulding surgical appliances. BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd. 27 May, 1968 [25 May, 1967 (2)], Nos. 24457/67 and 24473/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions A5, B8 and C3] Articles are formed from a sheet of a rigid or semi-rigid expanded cross-linked olefin polymer having a low thermal conductivity and heat storage capacity by (i) heating the sheet to a temperature which plasticizes the sheet so that it becomes pliable without destruction of its cellular nature, (ii) placing the heated sheet in direct contact with a body and shaping the heated sheet to the configuration of the body, and (iii) allowing the heated and shaped sheet to cool so that it sets in the configuration of the body. The sheet may be formed of low density polyethylene which has been partially cross-linked by ionizing radiation or treatment with an organic peroxide and is nitrogen-filled, e.g. the material commercially available under the Registered Trade Mark "Plastazote". The polymer may optionally be reinforced, e.g. with a sheet or strips of a higher density thermoplastics material, preferably a similar polymer to the expanded material. Other suitable expanded materials are those derived from copolymers of ethylene with vinyl acetate or ethyl acrylate, and from polypropylene. A preferred class of articles that can be formed comprises surgical articles such as orthopaedic supports, cervical collars, spinal supports, surgical footwear, splints and external prostheses; another useful class of articles comprises wrappings, casings and packages.
