Abstract

1,240,913. Refining lube oil stocks. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP. 26 Sept., 1969 [3 Oct., 1968], No. 47418/69. Heading C5E. A lube oil charge stock is solvent extracted to reduce its aromatics content, catalytically hydrorefiried and then dewaxed. Suitable charge stocks are fractions obtained from a vacuum or atmospheric distillation overhead or from an atmospheric or vacuum residue which has been deasphalted with methane, propane or butane. The solvent extraction is effected at 150-250‹ F. using a countercurrent of furfural, phenol, dichloroethyl ether or N- methyl pyrrolidone. The raffinate is stripped with steam and then refined with hydrogen at 600-900‹ F. and 800-5000 p.s.i.g. using a catalyst comprising Cr, Mo, W, Fe, Co and/or Ni on a support of alumina, silica, magnesia and/or zirconia, e.g. 3-10% Co or Ni and 10-30% Mo or W on alumina. The effluent from the hydrorefining zone is dewaxed either by contacting the entire effluent with a hydrogenating catalyst supported on a decationized mordenite at a temperature of 450-950‹ F. and a pressure of 100-1500 p.s.i.g. or by solvent dewaxing with a mixture of acetone or methyl ethyl ketone and benzene or toluene or a mixture of benzene and n-butyl ketone.
