Abstract
1,240,610. Self-opening umbrellas. W. BAUERMANN & SOHNE G.m.b.H. 3 Dec., 1969 [4 Jan., 1969], No. 59085/69. Heading A4P. A self-opening umbrella consists of a telescopic shaft (10, 11), Fig. 1 (not shown), telescopic spokes (14, 15), struts (17) pivotally attached at one end to an outer spoke member (15) by means of a sleeve (16) and at the other end to a first slide 18 disposed on the shaft, auxiliary stays (19) each coupled to a strut intermediate its ends and to a second slide 20 also disposed on the shaft, and at least two substantially parallel coil springs 27 interposed between the said slides and alongside the shaft so that they become increasingly stressed as the umbrella is closed. The first slide 18 is provided with sockets 23 closed at their ends 24 and adapted to receive the coil springs, and the second slide 20 is provided with pins 26 to engage the springs coaxially. The umbrella is preferably of the type having a generally rectangular transverse cross-section when closed and the coils and the shaft preferably lie in a common plane. The second slide 20 carries a latch (21), Fig. 1 (not shown), to hold the slide in position with respect to the shaft in the open and closed positions. Two springs may be used on each side of the shaft or alternatively a coil spring may be disposed around the shaft in addition to a single spring located on each side thereof. An alternative means of supporting the springs consists of telescopic fingers which surround each spring, one set of fingers being mounted on each of the slides.
