Abstract
1,240,556. Transformers and inductors; metal-vapour lamps. C. J. WARNEKE. 11 Dec., 1968 [18 Dec., 1967], No. 58899/68. Headings H1D and H1T. [Also in Divisions G3 and H2] A control system for a gas discharge lamp or lamps 13 comprises a saturable reactor 27, a high reluctance step-up transformer 19<SP>1</SP> and a saturable peaking transformer 17<SP>1</SP> which latter may be an autotransformer. The high reluctance transformer 191 has a laminated core 41<SP>1</SP>, 42<SP>1</SP> and is provided with a paramagnetic shunt 43<SP>1</SP> between the primary and secondary windings 23<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>1</SP> which latter winding may comprise a plurality of serially connected sections S1-S4. Between the ends of the magnetic shunt 43<SP>1</SP> and the core sections 421 are wedging shims 441 of non-magnetic material or alternatively the ends of the shunt 43<SP>1</SP> may enter the sections 42<SP>1</SP> and be secured therein by wedge shaped members. The transformer may also be provided with an auxiliary shunt member, 46<SP>1</SP> of paramagnetic material and the portion 50<SP>1</SP> thereof is adjustable relatively to the portions 48<SP>1</SP> by means of a member 54<SP>1</SP>. The transformer 17<SP>1</SP> may have a core 49 comprising either a wound laminar type of construction or a ceramic ferrite construction. The cone is provided with an air gap 79 in order to resist the production of a sharply peaked output waveform by the transformer. In the wound laminar type of core, the normal core clamps 73, 81 are provided. A lamp 13 used in a photo-chemical process comprises a high purity quartz or sapphire envelope filled with an inert gas together with a metal salt. The gases may be either helium, xenon, krypton, argon or a mixture of these and the salts may be of the metals, indium, mercury, mercury sulphide, a mercury amalgam, mercury bromide, mercury iodide, mercury cadmium or zinc. The gas pressure in the envelope is normally arranged to be less than one atmosphere. Cooling of the lamps is arranged by placing multiple leaf, silver foil vane type mercury condensers at each end of the envelope and a fan or blower may be provided. Examples given of the arc lengths of the lamps are 4À5 and 48 inches.
