Abstract

[Also in Division C6] In immunological diffusion testing, a controlled amount of the substance the effect of which on a substrate is to be tested is applied to the substrate in physical association with a magnetizable material (iron) and under the influence of a magnetic field to ensure sufficient contact of the substance with the substrate. Referring to Figure 4, the substance may be provided with a heavy magnetic core (Figure 4a), or put up in the form of a conical projectile (Figures 4b and 4c), a tablet with iron anchoring (Figure 4d); and paper discs or tablets impregnated or admixed with the magnetizable material (Figure 4e) or having the magnetizable material attached thereto by adhesion (Figure 4f). The magnetizable material may be encased in an inert envelope or coloured with a dye. A substrate-containing Petri dish 18, Figure 3, is placed on a base 17 made of a permanent magnet (or electromagnet), a dispenser 20 is correctly positioned over the dish with the aid of register marks 30-31 on the dish and 32-33 on the dispenser, and sensitivity discs including the magnetizable material according to the invention are delivered from the dispenser into the dish. The region of sensitivity surrounding the biologically active substance in the growth substrate may be estimated and the measured readings passed to a data processing unit for assembly and coding. The discs can subsequently be removed by reversing the Petri dish and collecting them in a sterile lid or paper by means of the field of attraction from the magnet.
