Abstract

[Also in Divisions B1-B2] A method for the manufacture of corrugated board comprising a layer of corrugated paper and a paper layer adhesively bonded to each surface of the corrugated layer comprises impregnating the intermediate layer wax e.g. paraffin wax prior to corrugating, applying adhesive to the tips of the corrugations and heating the layers being bonded to a temperature above the melting point of the wax in such a manner that the wax is partly evaporated and that the resultant vapours penetrate into the outer layers. In a preferred embodiment, a web of semi-chemical paper is saturated with white paraffin wax by immersion in a bath 9 of molten wax, excess wax being removed by rollers 10 and 11 prior to heating, cooling and storage of the impregnated web on roll 16. The impregnated web is corrugated by rollers 17 and 18 and adhesive applied to one set of corrugation tips which are pressed into contact with paper web 20, the exposed corrugation tips of the resultant product having adhesive applied thereto and being pressed into contact with paper web 24, the resultant product being steam heated on table 30, cut into sections at 32 and coated with a polyethylene-wax mixture from container 38. The other surface of the board may be similarly coated.
