Abstract

1,234,497. Casting processes. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 28 Aug., 1969, No. 42787/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions F4 and H5] A casting apparatus has a chill plate 14 and a susceptor 28 which rests on the plate during casting. The susceptor has a plurality of bores 38 extending through it and is surrounded by vertically spaced induction coils 36. In each bore is positioned a casting mould 44 (Fig. 4), preferably a shell-mould. The mould has a growth portion 52, an article (turbine blade)- forming portion 46, 48, 50 and a billet holding cavity 56. In operation, the moulds, susceptor and billets are heated to the melting point of the alloy being cast by induction heating and, it desired, resistance heating from elements 32 in a vacuum chamber 2. The alloy billet melts and fills the article-forming mould cavity, the chill plate 14 having been raised to the susceptor on a ram 20. Coolant is supplied to the chill plate and the induction coils 36 are switched off in an upward sequence to induce upward solidification of the melt. In a further embodiment melt is poured into the moulds simultaneously through a branching runner.
