Abstract
1,233,103. Bearings. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 20 May, 1969 [28 May, 1968; 20 Aug., 1968], Nos. 25432/68 and 39804/68. Heading F2A. A bearing comprises a layer of bearing material adhered to a backing member 17, the bearing material comprising lengths of a non- woven yarn disposed beside one another and set in a resin matrix with the bearing surface standing clear of the matrix. Preferably two different types of yarn, e.g. P.T.F.E. or carbon fibre are helically wound in or on a metal backing member and bonded thereto by an epoxy resin. The bearing may be made by winding the yarn on a former, applying a curable resin, assembling a backing shell over the yarn, curing the resin so that the yarn adheres to the backing shell, and removing the former. If the bearing surface is to be formed on the outside surface of the backing member, the yarn is wound on to the backing member and impregnated with resin, a former is slid over the yarn, the resin cured and the former removed.
