A process for the continuous manufacture of a composite panel comprises providing a continuous web, or a series of panels of cellular material, e.g. of a polyurethane, a polysulphone, a polystyrene or a phenolic resin, covering the web or panels on one or both faces with a layer of a fibre-reinforced curable resin, e.g. a polyester or an epoxy resin reinforced with a glass fibre mat, to form an assembly, the curable resin preferably being in a pre-gelled state, and curing the resin in position on said web or panels. An apparatus for carrying out the above process comprises means for continuously supplying and feeding the web or a series of panels of cellular material through a heating oven, means for feeding the layer or layers of curable resin through a pre-gelling oven or ovens, means for contacting the web or panels and the layer or layers and for applying pressure thereto, and means for heating and cooling the covered web or panels whilst applying pressure thereto. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a web of foam is fed by rollers 2 through oven 4, facings 5 and 5a formed by impregnating glass fibre mats 6 and 6a with a polyester resin from containers 7, 7a, 8 and 8a are fed through ovens 12 and 12a to pre-gel the resin, the components of the composite panel being pressed together by conveyers 16 and 17, said conveyers having a heating device 20 and a cooling device 21 associated therewith, means 18 and 19 being provided to cover the edges of the foam web with the material of the facing layers. The facings are preferably formed on release layers 9 and 9a; alternatively, the release layers may be replaced by or covered with resin films to form part of the composite panels. In an alternative embodiment, the surfaces and longitudinal edges of the web or panels are covered by a single facing, the facing being formed into a U-section prior to application to the web or panels. A facing formed of ceramic material, e.g. a glass mosaic or tiles, preferably carried on a flexible supporting sheet, e.g. of paper, may be included in the composite panel.
