Abstract
1338536 Compressed laminated sheet structure SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 30 May 1972 25282/72 Addition to 1266097 Headings B5A and B5N A sheet of open-cell foam material, e.g. polyurethane, is impregnated with a curable thermosetting resin, e.g. a liquid epoxy resin, in a bath thereof, and then a layer of fibrous reinforcement, e.g. glass fibre mat, is applied to one or both sides of the sheet which is then compressed to shape the sheet and expel resin from it into the reinforcement, by drawing the assembled layers through a shaping die (e.g. by means of rollers and belts), the resin being allowed to cure during its passage therethrough. In the example, heat is applied to effect partial curing before the sheets enter the die which is heated by electric heaters to complete the cure. The die may be an open-sided slit die with tapered entrance, suitable dimensions and curing times for this being given, or it may be shaped to form a pipe, profiled beam or other shape.
