Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A working member 17, for example a brake, is actuated from an operating lever 19 by a bar 22 which carries a pin 24 engaging in a slot 23 which is eccentric with respect to the lever pivot 20, the member 17 being held in a stable rest position, where the brake is applied, under the combined action of a leaf spring 21 and a helical spring 25 which applies force to lever 19 by way of sleeve 26 freely slidable on bar 22, pin 28, plunger 29 and connecting link 32 to lever projection 34. When the lever is operated manually to release the brake, the operating force acts against the combined leaf and helical spring forces until projection 34 reaches top centre. Thereafter the helical spring opposes the leaf spring allowing the brake to be maintained in its astable inoperative position by only a small force applied to lever 19. The position of pivot 20 may be set by an adjustment screw 36. An application of the invention to a missile launching apparatus is described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown), in which two mechanisms as shown in Fig. 2 are employed to secure the apparatus in adjustable positions about horizontal and vertical axes.
