Abstract
1,232,154. Cathode-ray tubes. STROMBERG DATAGRAPHIX Inc. 4 Aug., 1969 [19 Aug., 1968], No. 38863/69. Heading H1D. A shaped-beam cathode-ray tube comprises a beam-shaping plate 13, a beam-trimming plate 16 and a mesh 18 adjacent the trimming plate for dividing the beam and producing uniform intensity over the beam-trimming aperture 17. The beam passes through an Einzel lens consisting of annular electrodes 24, 27 maintained at the same positive potential and separated by a tube 26 maintained at earth potential. The potentials applied to the lens and to focusing electrode 23 determine the cross-section of the beam at the mesh 18 and trimming plate 17, both of which are within the tube 26. By means of deflection electrodes 29, 31 the beam is directed through one of a number of shaped apertures 14 in the shaping plate 13 and thence directed by a further lens 32, 52, 62, deflection electrodes 33, 34 and deflection yoke 36 on to a screen 12. The lens 32, 52, 62 is adjusted to image one of the shaping apertures 14 on the screen. The effect of the mesh 18 is to produce uniform intensity of the beam at the operative shaping aperture 14 with a sharp cut-off at the edge of the aperture. The electrodes 23, 24, 27 are adjusted so that the mesh is not imaged in the plane of the shaping apertures 14.
