Abstract
1,231,868. Xerographic developing apparatus. RANK XEROX Ltd. Aug. 6, 1968 [Aug. 9, 1967], No.37506/68. Heading G2H. A xerographic development apparatus has a support 20 for maintaining developer, comprising carrier particles and charged toner particles, adjacent a surface bearing a latent electrostatic image and means to vibrate the support to suspend the developer in a fluidized state in contact with the image, and an apertured development electrode in proximity to the image and biased to the same polarity as the image. An assembly 14, oscillated by a motor 24 through a link 26, has a support plate 20 as described in Specification 1,193,443. Oscillation of the assembly 14 causes developer to become fluidized in development zone 22. Developer can flow freely through a development electrode 28 in the form of a mesh screen. A screen electrode 30 supports a quantity of developer adjacent the image surface. The mesh of the screen is such that toner particles may flow freely, but not carrier particles. A sump 32 beneath the electrode 30 contains developer having an excess quantity of toner particles. During operation, vibrations of the assembly cause charged toner particles to rise through electrode 30. A variable potential 38 maintains electrode 28 at potential slightly above the potential of the non-image areas, e.g. 100 volts positive, while a second variable potential 40 maintains the electrode 30 at a higher potential than the electrode 28, e. g. 4, 000 volts positive. Negatively charged toner particles are repelled by the electrode 28 to prevent particles not associated with carrier particles from entering zone 22. Carrier particles not carrying toner attract toner particles. Thus, toner particles are continuously conveyed from the sump by carrier particles to the image surface. The potentials 38, 40 can be varied to control image density. In a modification, the electrode 30 is replaced by an undulating screen(42) Fig. 2 (not shown) with insulating caps (44) which prevent the upward passage of uncharged toner particles. In another modification, a potential (40) Fig. (not shown) is applied between electrode wires (52) and plate (20), while a potential (38) is applied between the wires (52) and the substrate of the image surface. An insulating screen (54) is apertured to allow the passage of toner but not carrier particles.
